The '80s trans nightlife icon fka Natalia Gervais opens up about "retransitioning" to PAPER Magazine

PAPER Magazine's "Transformation" issue has generated considerable buzz as the launchpad of a newly understated Christina Aguilera, but its most important feature may be one you haven't read. In "Perpetual Transition," Brian Belovitch (previously known as 1980s New York transgender nightlife fixture Natalia "Tish" Gervais) opens up to genderqueer writer-activist Jacob Tobia about their journey "from man to woman and back again," a complicated experience that will be further chronicled in their upcoming memoir 'Trans Figured: My Journey from Boy to Girl to Woman to Man.'

An effeminate child, Brian Belovitch fled from their stifling Rhode Island home to New York City at 17 years old. Upon arriving, they found a gay community in which "you had to pick a lane," telling Tobia, "Either you were a butch queen and you looked like Cheyenne Jackson or Matt Bomer or you were in the other lane: You were a drag queen or [got a] sex change. It was very lonely and confusing to be in the middle of all of that. You were really herded into those roles."

Belovitch saw no point in attempting to butch themselves up, so after a period of gender-bending they resigned themselves to the overwhelming sense that transitioning and living as a woman was their best, safest bet. They claimed that they never felt that they were a woman, but that their femininity dictated that they were not a man: "Transitioning became a way to survive in the world. When I made that decision to transition, I thought 'I'm gonna go undercover. I'm gonna go stealth. No one's gonna ever know so they can't hurt me. So they can't make fun of me. It'll be harder for them to pick me off or exclude me.'"

Brian became Natalia "Tish" Gervais and managed to pass as a woman by day while being an openly trans fixture of the downtown scene and icon in their own right by night - "'The Bombshell of Rock n' Roll,' or 'The Girl with Something Extra.'"A home movie shot in Manhattan's East Village at the height of Tish's fame sees them roaming the streets with seemingly uncomplicated ease, grabbing a bite to eat at a bodega and pointing themselves out in the pages of Vanity Fair and Details.

Unfortunately, it was not built to last. After briefly leaving New York for what would prove to be a failed marriage to a soldier, Tish returned to find a city transformed: "There was always this underlying misogynistic, sexist view of me back then, which was devastating. I call it the 'Marilyn Monroe Syndrome,'" Belovitch told Tobia. Trans entertainers were not taken seriously outside of the club, and finding office jobs impossible to retain Tish turned to sex work, eventually testing HIV-positive.

Belovitch says that witnessing the treatment of gay men during the height of the AIDS crisis was the catalyst for their decision to "retransition," but that ultimately they never felt tethered to one gender or the other. "I never felt like, 'Oh I'm in the wrong body,' or felt like a girl, even when I was presenting as a trans woman. My idea of what a woman was or how a woman or a girl was supposed to feel was taught to me, something that I learned by observation or by other people's opinions or ideas about how they thought I should be."

Tish went back to being Brian, ceasing hormone treatment and having their breasts removed - a decision that was met with no small amount of flack from the NYC trans community. "I got a lot of flack in the beginning from my friends in the community. It was very painful. I felt kicked out of the tribe. Some of my good friends reacted badly, and I can understand why, because I'm sure they felt it was threatening." Belovitch also feared what would greet them in the mirror upon retransitioning, having grown accustomed to the glamorous, bombshell figure of Tish.

Belovitch's story is reflective of a reality of a small portion of the trans community that is viewed by many activists as a "complication to the narrative" they have worked to build. As Tobia explains:

"As trans people, we've tried to make it easy for cis folks. In order to argue that we should have access to trans-affirming medical care, in order to have our breasts removed or augmented, in order to get the hormones that we need, we've adopted an oversimplified narrative about what transition means: Transition is always medical. Transition is a one-time, irreversible, life-saving expense. Transition is a permanent affirmation of someone's gender identity.

"But like all things human, transitioning is messier and more nuanced than we often let on. Some trans people transition only 'partially,' taking hormones but not having any surgery. Some trans people transition 'all the way,' receiving hormone therapy and pursuing multiple surgeries. Other trans people — people like myself — transition only socially: dressing differently, acting differently, embracing a different gender presentation in the world without necessarily changing our bodies. And some trans people, people like Brian Belovitch, medically transition, live for years in that body and transition once again."

In truth, very little data exists to shed substantial light on retransition rates for transmen and -women. One Swedish study that examined transgender individuals from 1960-2010 found that only 2.2% of subjects sought to reverse their transitional procedures. Nevertheless, these individuals exist, and their experiences of transitioning (and "retransitioning") are no less valid than those of the men and women for whom it is a "one-time" deal.

Today, Belovitch lives as a gay man, but tells Tobia that it is because of their age and "general tiredness" that they are not assertive about not feeling comfortable with cis male pronouns: "I'm too old to switch, so I just sort of go with what's simple: I'm gay, I'm a cis male for simplicity. But I feel strongly that gender is so nonbinary. It's so much more fluid, so much more than just that."

Responsible for the title of this post, Kristen Stewart may have the most internet-famous gay AF moment. Despite a public history of hetero relationships (even derailing her career by sleeping with the married male director of her film Snow White & The Huntsman), Stewart claimed the gay label during her SNL opening monologue in 2017. Lest you worry about invalidating her ⭐lesbianism, she does identify as bisexual.

bivider.jpg

Cynthia Nixon has made a lot of statements about her sexuality. Though she admits that "the technically precise term for [her] orientation is bisexual" (and once believed "we’re all bisexual”), she now shies away from the word, claiming that lesbians get more respect for their same-sex attraction than bisexual women do. Cynthia, who has also called herself "gay as a political stance," continues to use the lesbian moniker in her campaign for governor of New York.

I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line "I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better." And they tried to get me to change it because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me, it’s a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me.

I am very annoyed about this issue. Why can't it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? I don't pull out the "bisexual" word because nobody likes the bisexuals. Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals... We get no respect.

Bethany Meyers is a self-identified lesbian who recently wed actor Nico Tortorella, her male romantic and sexual partner of 11 years. They have been together since Bethany was 16 years old and consider one another each others' husbands and wives. In September 2017, the couple appeared on the cover of The Advocate with the headline "Yes, This Is a Queer Family."

Bonus. Nico identifies as bisexual and genderqueer. On whether 'pansexual' would be a more accurate label: "The B in LGBTQ+ has been fought for, for so long. I’m not going to be the person that’s like, ‘No, I need a P, I need another letter!’ I stand by people that have paved this way for somebody like me.”

bivider.jpg

Michael Stipe considers himself "80% gay," someone who is attracted to both men and women but prefers men most of the time. “I hate and refuse to apply the term bisexual to myself. It doesn’t seem appropriate. It feels like just another label.”

mstipe.jpgbivider.jpg

not so homo header.jpg

At the other end of the spectrum, Michelle Rodriquez made a point to distance herself from the lesbian label after being included on the cover of Curve without her knowledge (which many fans took as her coming out). She said the misconception that she's gay could hurt her career.

There are certain things that can close doors between a celebrity and certain audiences…If I were Ellen [DeGeneres] I may get away with the ‘I’m gay’ level of exposure, but I’m not a comedian, I like men (real ones anyway) and I’ve only been in this business for seven years, not 20.

Michelle later came out as bisexual, saying "Eventually it's going to wrinkle up and I won't be able to use it. I wanted to be honest about who I am and see what happens."

mrodrigez.jpg
bivider.jpg

Queen Gillian Anderson, proud bisexual, speculated that her experience as a young woman was easier than a lesbian girl's because she still had a place in hetero society.

I was in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I was in high school... If I had thought I was 100% gay, would it have been a different experience for me? Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation? It’s possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys.

It wasGore Vidal'sfamily that insisted on labeling him gay despite his identifying as bisexual. In this case, though, his family may have been right. Vidal, who was born in 1925, believed'gay' could only be used to describe sex acts and not a person's identityor orientation. For someone of his generation, 'gay' referred only to men perceived as weak because of their 'femininity' (including being the penetrated partner); Vidal was a socially and physically powerful man who reportedly always topped.

Classical history major side note: This is somewhat similar to the ancient Greek understanding of sexual orientation: classification is based on giving/receiving or dom/sub in sex acts rather than on the sex(es) involved.

gvidal.jpg
bivider.jpg

Like Vidal's family,Cara Delevingne's friends insist on calling her gay when she is in a same-sex relationship. Cara rejects the label, though, saying: "Once I spoke about my sexual fluidity, people were like, 'So you’re gay.' And I’m like, 'No, I’m not gay.'"

*For the sake of simplicity, I've included anyone who has relationships with both men and women, even if they identify as pansexual, queer, or label-free.

Margaret Cho. "I just can't decide, I just want to have sex with everybody. [...] Of course, I've had relationships with women, but my politics are more queer than my lifestyle." (Cho is also poly.)

Bai Ling. Before she was fluent in English: "My name is pronounced 'bi,' so when I was asked, 'Are you bi?' I said, 'Yes, I am Bai.' Later I found out what it means, and I said, 'Sure, I am bi!'"

Evan Rachel Wood. "This is part of who I am, and I'm old enough to really know who I am by now."

Azealia Banks. "I can't be homophobic because I'm bisexual."

Drew Barrymore. "Do I like women sexually? Yes, I do. Totally. I think a woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful."

Tila Tequila. "I was the first one to put out a TV show about bisexuality...right after season 2, Katy Perry made “I Kissed a Girl” and then everybody was kissing girls and then Ellen came out and everybody started coming out, slowly. It became a topic of conversation. You don’t have to like me but I did it first."

Demi Lovato. "All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don't think there's anything wrong with experimentation at all."

Andy Dick. Calls himself 'try-sexual' ("I'll try anything once"). "Both [the gay and straight communities] want to push me gay."

Fergie."I think women are beautiful. I've had a lot of fun with women, and I'm not ashamed of it. The problem is that I also love a well-endowed man."

Zoe Saldana."As of today, I've been attracted to the male species, but if one day I wake up and want to be with a woman, I will do that because it is my life, therefore it is my decision."

Snooki. Considers herself bisexual, but says, "I would never be with a girl because I like...penis."

Billie Joe Armstrong. "Not sure if [he is] still bisexual" despite lots of past romantic/sexual relationships with both men and women.

Saffron Burrows. “If I was going to make a broad generalization, I’d say that I prefer the company of women. ...For a woman to say she has had a dalliance with another woman is quite trendy these days, but I do not like that trendiness. Life isn’t about dalliances – it’s about individuals. You come across people in your life that you find very interesting. It’s not about something flighty."

ONTD Original: Throwback to Britney and Gaga's Parking Fails 🚗

Celebs: they're are just like us! And they get into embarrassing car accidents. Yes there are threatening cases that happen in the streets, but sometimes sh** goes down in the parking lot too.

Britney Spears in Hollywood (2007)

It's no secret 2007 was a rough year for her, and the presence of paps did not help either. Britney was heading to a pharmacy in Hollywood driving her Mercedes station wagon, when she accidentally pulled up a little too soon and rear-ended the car next to her. Cameras flashed away as she readjusted her parking position and got out to see the damage.

Check out the clip:

Let's not forget when she opened the door and immediately nicked the car.

Britney investigates.

I'm not sure if she helped take care of the situation, but I hope she had the same concerns as Cher Horowitz.

Lady Gaga Rear-ending Mark Ronson's Car (2016)

Gaga, likely due to the New Yorker in her, was a late bloomer and obtained her driver's license in the same year at the age of 30.

This accident was not recorded, but the aftermath was conveniently captured for the filming of her Five Foot Two documentary. Gaga did some nice damage to music producer Mark Ronson's car with her Ford Bronco when she was on her way to the studio to work with Ronson and Florence Welch. She confronted him before they started working. (what a lovely way to begin a recording session)

Check out the clip:

Gaga after hitting his car and apologizing:

The collaborators look back at the incident fondly:

These moments bring up the question about the recent trend of proclaiming gays can't drive over social media.

So fellow LGBT/ONTD members, do you find driving and parking stressful or in anyway difficult? Are you a gay who can't drive?

Video Game Developer Quantic Dream Sues French Media Over Coverage of Toxic Work Conditions

– Quantic Dream is a French video game development studio known for their (mostly, usually during the first week) critically acclaimed interactive games Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, featuring motion capture acting from actors like Ellen Page and William Defoe and work from game designer David Cage. Their newest game Detroit: Become Human starring Jesse Williams releases May 25th, 2018.
– In spring of 2017 according to Le Monde, five former employees filed a complaint against the studio for circulating "degrading images". In February before the complaint was filed, over 600 photoshopped images of employees that were misogynistic or homophobic, some of which contained Nazi symbols, were discovered by an IT employee who was the subject of some of the photos. These files dated back to 2013 and were even displayed openly at Quantic Dream, though Cage et. al said they were not aware of the more offensive ones. On January 18th 2018 and onwards, Le Monde and other outlets published stories detailing the harassment.
The pictures were published at French outlet Canard PC(nsfw). One includes a picture of a male stripper with Cage's head photoshopped on top, holding a power tool with a dildo attached at the end of it. Other include employees faces being put over images of Hitler, female sex workers, and more. 83% of the 180 person studio consisted of men, but Cage insisted Quantic Dream is not like a “rugby locker room.”
– On Feb. 6th 2018, Quantic Dreams responded by denying these allegations, saying two former employees were dismissed of their claims in court, and that a third judgement of the case was in dispute, lastly reiterating that they "have not heard" to date of any complaints of harassment and discrimination.
– ... But on February 27th 2017, executive producer Guillaume de Fondaumière sent an email obtained by Le Monde admitting he knew the photos existed for years and that they were a mistake. However the central problem is not just the photos themselves, but the environment they sprang from, which includes allegations of long work weeks, sexual harassment, and homophobic and racist comments. Le Monde spoke to 15 former employees from the company.
– Two of the former employees said that once, after reviewing surveillance video of a burglary at the company, Cage asked someone of Tunisian desecent if one of the perpetrators was his cousin. Cage has told Le Monde the allegations are "absurd". He also said, “You want to talk about homophobia? I work with Ellen Page, who fights for LGBT rights. You want to talk about racism? I work with Jesse Williams, who fights for civil rights in the USA... Judge me by my work.”
– With high turnover, over 50 people left Quantic Dream between 2015 and 2016, many due to depression or burnout from development cycles and long work hours. Quantic Dream's upcoming game Detroit: Become Human caused some public riff when the studio displayed a scene containing domestic abuse. Two sources told Le Monde they warned Cage the scene could come off as misogynistic, but Cage was uninterested in revising anything. He's long been criticized for clumsily "gamifying" hot topic social issues to engage mature audiences, not giving them the breadth and responsible writing they deserve. In Heavy Rain the playable female character had the option to dance for another male character at a club to obtain information (see the gif), and in another sequence could be drugged, kidnapped, physically assaulted and potentially killed in some dude's basement if the player wasn't careful and didn't make the correct choices.
– Quantic Dream announced today they'll be suing Le Monde and other French outlets for these and other false allegations. Some are saying this is the first time a game studio is suing the press for negative coverage like this. Canard PC said they received two threatening letters from Quantic Dream after publishing their coverage in January, but are not in the studio's crosshairs (yet).
– Detroit: Become Human has crossed gold status before its launch. A demo comprising of the first sequence, the hostage situation displayed in earlier demonstrations, will be available to play on the PS Store Tuesday, April 24th. Also, you can use your Amazon Alexa with it, because why not sell more information to third parties?

ONTD Original: Five Gorgeous Gay and Bisexual Male Models

$

Someone once told me that my type was "unspeakably gorgeous men" and well...they were right. I mean is it so wrong to have extra high standards for men since 9 times out of 10 they're trash? I'd rather have a trashbag who looks like Apollo than a trashbag who looks like Hades, just saying. Plucked from my innermost lusty fascinations, here are five of the most beautiful male models that identify as either gay or bisexual. So don't worry gals and gays, there's a fuckboy in here for everyone. FYI, most of the pics below the cut are NSFW.

REECE KING
title or descriptiontitle or description

With cheekbones sculpted by the ghost of Michelangelo, and a piercing gaze reserved for only the most Scorpio of Scorpios, Reece is a 23-year-old model from Essex, England. His father is Irish and his mother is from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. His career is still up-and-coming, but he has gained a bit of notoriety over the internet thanks to his 565,000 thirsty Instagram followers and some risque boudoir photo shoots. While he has discussed his sexuality briefly on his Twitter account, he officially came out as bisexual this year in an interview with Gay Times Magazine.

WILLY CARTIER
title or description233ce1531d90298375094d5e759fca2d

Do you ever look at someone and think "It's completely unfair how attractive you are. Get off of this planet!"? That's how I feel every time I look at this man. Former flame of Frank Ocean, Willy is a 26-year-old model from France of Vietnamese, Senegalese, and French descent. Willy got his big break when he was chosen as the face for Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci Fall/Winter campaign in 2010. With his androgynous beauty, Willy has modeled both men's and women's fashion. While I don't think he's ever publicly commented on his sexuality, I believe he is bisexual, as he also dated French model Anais Mali in 2015.

EDISON FAN
title or descriptiontitle or description

Chinese-born New Zealander Edison Fan is a 36-year-old model who bathes in the blood of the innocent because I could've sworn sis was like 25. With a large social media following, creator of Chinese-based sports apparel company OMG, and a judge on Chinese modelling competition show I Supermodel, he's developed a pretty cushy brand for himself. Edison identifies as gay, and was engaged or married idk to some New Zealand guy named Josh Taylor, but I can't tell if they're still together. In late 2017, Edison welcomed a baby boy I'm assuming by surrogate but there's no photos of Josh with this bb, so I'm guessing he's single now if anyone's looking for a daddy?

BARRETT PALL
title or descriptiontitle or description

I'll admit I don't know much about this Abercrombie-looking motherfucker, but I'm a sucker for his freckles and big lips. A quick trip to Wikipedia tells me that he's a 30-year-old Jewish-American model from New York. Openly gay, Pall is proud of both his religion and his sexuality. Like many attention and money-seeking individuals of today's generation, Pall also has a decently successful YouTube channel with 25k subscribers. He has shot campaigns for Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, Modern Luxury, Hobbs and Kent, Diesel, Lacoste and others.

JON KORTAJARENA
title or descriptiontitle or description

Without a doubt the most famous and successful model on this list, if not one of the most famous and successful male models of our generation, Jon has had a noteworthy career in the fashion industry since 2004. He is irrefutably beautiful, whether he does it for you or not, and once again, it's not fair that people get to look like this. He is 32 years old and hails from Spain, where he was "discovered" at a fashion show in Barcelona. He has had a small acting career as well, with bit roles in the 2009 film A Single Man and the TV show Quantico. While there's no receipts of him commenting on his sexuality, his most famous relationship has been his rumored but obvious off/on-again romance with actor Luke Evans.

Most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing… Most straight people had a hard time being convinced to watch ‘Broke Back Mountain.’ (I admit that I couldn’t go see the movie either, despite my sister’s ringing endorsement, because I didn’t want to watch the two male characters having sex.) Does that make me homophobic? Probably.”

'White American Idol'? Viewer Voting Sparks Outrage From Judges, Twitter

$

American viewers were given their first opportunity to cast votes on this season of American Idol this week to determine six of the spots in the top ten and it turns out that the viewing base is just like it was when the show was on Fox. Five of the six finalists chosen by America were white leaving five of the six nonwhite singers, including the two gay contestants, up for elimination and stuck singing for the judges to save their lives in the competition.

The judges and people on Twitter were not impressed with America's judgement.

When contestant Jurnee, a black lesbian, wasn't chosen by America, the judges all praised her and Katy Perry said: "Never have I ever seen a more qualified woman for the job and still not get the job. What’s the disconnect, America?"

Lionel Richie told contestant Dennis Lorenzo that there were times when he has never questioned his country but "America does not know what they're doing!"

Finally, when America didn't choose drag queen Ada Vox and she gave an emotional performance of "And I am Telling You, I Am Not Going", the judges stood up and Katy explained that the three of them collectively had 60 years of experience in the industry and they might not know everything, but they do know talent when they see it so they'd made an executive decision to send Ada directly in with the safe contestants before the planned deliberation.

In an interview after the show, the judges gave some more insight into their thought process in automatically saving Ada. Katy explained:"We were like 'what kind of game is this?' so we started talking about it and looking at the math of what was being represented on stage and we knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Ada earned the spot fair and square."
Lionel explained the crowd of people chanting for Ada made it an easy decision for them.

Ada said America might just not be ready for someone like her.

- Janelle Monáe's album, Dirty Computer, comes out tomorrow and she's featured on the cover of Rolling Stone.
- She addresses her sexuality for the first time, "Being a queer black woman in America," she says, taking a breath as she comes out, "someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker." She initially identified as bisexual, she clarifies, "but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to learning more about who I am."
-
She goes on to talk about her family (50 first cousins!) and her previous stuggles with her sexuality, and going through therapy.
- She talks about her relationship with Prince and how hard it was to finish the album without him.

In an interview with Attitude magazine, Troye Sivan recounted how when he was 17, he created a Grindr account and lied about his age, not necessarily to hook up with older men, but to have the same sexual experiences that his hetero peers could easily obtain.

"All my friends were hooking up with random people at parties, and I just felt so left behind because I didn’t know gay people, I didn’t know where to meet gay people."

-Obtained a fake ID and also created a Grindr account
-Realizes that he was reckless and stresses these are things a 17-year-old shouldn't have to do
-Reflecting, he's realized the guys who went after him were creepy, because he looked "so young"

"I don’t remember specifically but, because I was always so small, I was so scared to meet up with people because I was like, ‘I’m going to get killed, I’m going to get murdered by someone."

-Ultimately doesn't have any regrets, even wrote a song about the experience titled "17" for his new album

There’s actually a song about it on the album called ’17’… Originally the chorus of the song was ‘Here he comes, like he just walked out of a dream, doesn’t care that you’re 17’. And I was like ‘uh, that sounds a bit predatory’, and maybe it was a little bit."

It's unfortunate that a lot of gay kids feel they have to turn to outlets like this.

Recently Shania showed her ass, devastating stans - prompting an Ontd original to brace yourselves if your fav is next - and disappointing others with her thoughts on how she would have voted for Drumpf.

Karamo from the rebooted Queer Eye says he forgives her and encourages other to do the same, saying it's in "our nature".

"As a community we are very forgiving. It's in our nature because we have been treated so bad by people in our family and our friends who didn't accept us as we go on our journeys, that we've learned how to be empathetic and to forgive and I believe that as a community we will again."

"That one vote doesn't define her as a woman.", he adds
.

No word yet if Shania is invited back onto Drag Race.

The Actor - SAMIRA WILEY
Who? – Formerly of the hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black. Currently starring in the hit Hulu show The Handmaid’s Tale.
Why? – Have you seen that face? She’s every woman’s dream girl with a smile that could light up your life. She also seems to have her personal life together, being married to OitNB writer Lauren Morelli.

The Fine Wine - ROBIN ROBERTS
Who? - Sportscenter and Good Morning America anchor, Robin Roberts has been a steady presence in our lives, impressing us with her beauty, kindness, and strength at every turn.
Why? - Those arms.  That smile.  Keep doing whatever you're doing, queen.  Both we and your wife Amber Laign are loving it.

The Athletes - MEGAN RAPINOE and SUE BIRD
Who?– A couple of athletes, Megan is on the USWNT and plays for the Seattle Reign. Sue Bird plays for the US women’s basketball team and the Seattle Storm.
Why? – This slot was originally going to go to just messy ass Pinoe, but upon a google and spotting of Sue’s arms, we made room. Pinoe is known for her messy love life wracked with cheating and hospital breakups, but she is willing to stand (or rather, kneel) for what she believes in. She seems like an overall decent human and that’s what matters. Sue is the WNBA all-time assists leader so her athleticism is a big draw tbh. OP and friends don’t actually know anything else about her.

The Singer - HAYLEY KIYOKO
Who?– Lesbian Jesus and triple threat
Why?– Hayley Kiyoko is unafraid of the consequences of being an open and proud lesbian in the pop world, which is incredibly inspiring and hopefully leads to more like her. Her dad dance moves keep us enthralled and her album was overall full of bops. Any straight girl would be lucky to call Hayley their girlfriend.

The Legend - LILY TOMLIN
Who?– She’s a legend. You know who.
Why?– Because Lily is 78 years old and still making us laugh on the reg in her hit show Grace and Frankie. Having been with the same woman (Jane Wagner) since the 70’s, she gives all the serial monogamist lesbians I know hope.

The Cougar - HOLLAND TAYLOR
Who?– The timelessly regal Holland Taylor is a prolific actress (The L Word, D.E.B.S., Bossom Buddies) and robber of cradles.
Why? –That pussy work must be magic.  If it's good enough for Sarah Paulson, surely it's good enough for ONTD.

The Comedienne - KATE McKINNON
Who?– Cast Member on Saturday Night Live and in my heart
Why?– Arguably the best cast member currently on SNL, Kate is one of the few who can make their guests break on the regular. Her silly humor and willingness to look like an idiot are very attractive qualities in the lesbian world. Also, she’s pretty tight-lipped about her personal life, having no social media. It’s nice to have a lesbian we don’t worry about embarrassing us very often. Which leads us into…

The Hot Mess - ANNIE CLARK (St. Vincent)
Who? – Singer of songs
Why?– St. Vincent is known for two things: her great music and her messy as hell dating life. She first popped on our radar as one half of a #goals couple with Carrie Brownstein. That one ended in hellfire when Carrie reportedly cheated on Annie with OitNB’s Taylor Schilling. Since then, Annie has sunk her sexually fluid claws into partygirl sweetheart Cara Delevigne, stuck in an on/off (currently and maybe permanently off). She has also been linked with Kstew, though it’s possible they’re just friends.

The Model - STELLA MAXWELL
Who?– I don’t really know, tbh. I guess she’s a model.
Why?– I and many other only know who Stella is based on her dating history. She’s the girl Miley fingered in public and is now very publicly and grossly dating Kstew. So why should she be an ONTD gf? We don’t know, actually.

The Childhood Crush - PATRICIA VELÁSQUEZ
Who? – A Venezuelan actress and model, considered by some to be the first Native American model.
Why? – If you saw The Mummy as a kid, you know who I’m talking about. She played Anck Su Namun and kicked her way into our hearts and onto our vision boards. If you’re an idiot like OP, you only recently found out she’s a lesbian and that childhood crush turned into an adulthood crush. She executive produced and starred in a terrible lesbian movie entitled Liz in September in 2014 (OP highly recommends a watch).

The Honorary Lesbian - AMBER HEARD
Who?– Actress, haver of trash taste
Why? – Amber is bi, so really we don’t want her to be a lesbian for our sake, but her own. Amber has consistently shown us she has garbage taste in men. Please Amber, for yourself, discover you’re not really attracted to men.

ONTD Original: The Parallels Between Lana Del Rey's and Hurts' Musical Journey

$

You all probably know who Lana Del Rey is, so I don't really need to introduce her. But if you are not familiar with them, Hurts is a Manchester-based pop band that found most of their success in Russia and Scandinavian countries. Maybe you know their breakout hit "Stay", their song "Devotion" with Kylie Mingoue, their Lady Gaga "Judas" remix, or Theo Hutchcraft after lending his voice to Calvin Harris'"Under Control". You might also recognize Theo being pals with Harry Styles.

In no way I am comparing their success or quality of music, but after being a fan of their music for some time (Hurts since 2011, Lana since 2012), I couldn't help but notice the STRIKING parallels of their musical progressions from album to album. So here's a post dedicated to these musical acts who, if they pair up, could be a match made in heaven.

HAPPINESS (2010)BORN TO DIE (2012)
Singles: "Better than Love", "Wonderful Life", "Stay", "Sunday"
Themes: the band was going through a low point where they were unemployed and doing small gigs as previous band the Daggers. They eventually got a major label record deal, revamped their image, and recorded an album which is full of lush and somber songs, which were about their time before forming Hurts. Sonically 80's new wave with 90's ballads.
Singles: "Video Games", "Born to Die", "Blue Jeans", "National Anthem", "Summertime Sadness"
Themes: Lana plays around with American imagery, and a lot of the songs are about summertime sadness (no pun intended), loss, and nostalgia. Includes hip-hop productions, and real life sound-bites.

Parallels: these were their big debuts full of #sadcore songs. The title "Happiness" is quite paradoxical to the overall tone of the album, while "Born to Die" is quite nihilistic and confrontational.

Their initial singles received viral success with low budget videos; "Wonderful Life" gaining 20 million views (it was a lot then, and now their original upload was deleted and they remade a more high production video later) and "Video Games" garnered a lot of views and gained momentum on UK radio.

- "Wonderful Life": Now called Hurts, Hutchcraft and Anderson recorded an amateur music video for a song called "Wonderful Life" with a female dancer who had responded to an advert in a shop window. After they uploaded the video to their YouTube channel in April 2009, it quickly went viral. They were signed to RCA imprint Major Label in July. The video has since had over 21 million views on YouTube, putting it in the top 200 most watched videos on the website.

- "Video Games": "...the song's atmospheric and grainy video, cut together by the singer, perfectly complemented the whole high-art-meets-low-art vibe. Del Rey was duly signed by Interscope, which released 'Video Games' officially in October and saw it climb to the top 10 in the UK and half a dozen other European countries."

EXILE (2013)ULTRAVIOLENCE (2014)
Singles: "Miracle", "Blind", "Somebody to Die For", "The Road"
Themes: the topics were more or less similar to Happiness but grittier. Their lyrics included death and sex, and sonically went in a more industrial-rock place.
Singles: "West Coast", "Shades of Cool", "Ultraviolence"
Themes: Lana talked about toxic relationships and indulgence. Sonically it was psychedelic rock.

Parallels: Both albums, thematically, went to a much more darker place than the formers. These eras were reactionary to their previous ones after having an explosive debut.

It's been noted that they recorded the album in a very dark and cold studio to impact the music. Hurts on the meaning of Exile: "That sense of being in a weird place. Freedom, fear, isolation, joy, religion, punishment, the decadence that comes with exile—always being on tour, always far away from home. It did feel like we were on the run, always chasing something.""The Crow" is about being consumed in a darkness, "The Rope" is about saving someone from suicide, and "Sandman" is a creepy sleeping anthem with the support a children's choir. They also had the help of Elton John playing piano on the song "Help."

UV was initially going to be called Black Beauty but she decided to change it since the rumors started. In songs like "Money Power Glory" and FMWUTTT, she was making fun of the way she was perceived in the media and the image casted on her. The infamous "he hit me and it felt like a kiss" line in "Ultraviolence" sparked controversy and the whole topic of Lana Del Rey's music with regards to feminism.

I'd also like to add how conceptual their album and title tracks were.
"This is exile, we're in exile" vs. "This is ultraviolence, ultraviolence."

SURRENDER (2015)HONEYMOON (2015)
Singles: "Some Kind of Heaven", "Lights", "Wish", "Wings"
Themes: Positivity, hope. The songs on this album were more contemporary pop than their last two and a lot more vibrant.
Singles: "Honeymoon", "High By the Beach", "Music to Watch Boys To", "Freak"
Themes: Drugs, love, vacationing, grief. She dubbed the sounds of the album as 'muddy trap' and 'jazzy'.

Parallels: You can just even see it with their album covers - they're no longer in portrait mode and now, in a way, mobile and on their way to a destination (Lana finally got in a damn car after all these album covers lmao). Hurts explained the meaning of Surrender: "That feeling of letting go,” says Theo, “not resisting. Often, when people ask us about it - maybe it has a different meaning in other languages - they say it’s a very negative title. 'Surrender’ is a lot more extroverted, and outward looking.”
Honeymoon does not stray a lot from her old themes, but with songs like "The Blackest Day" she's finally realizing the old routines of negativity she needs to stray from.

Let's also talk about the video for "High By the Beach" where Lana is no longer a victim of her relationships seen in videos like "Blue Jeans", "National Anthem", and in "Born to Die". She takes control and conquers a helicopter, symbolic of the relationship of her life with fame. This is probably the most action we've seen Lana do in a mv at that point where she's running around her ugly beach house and firing the gun.

The videos for Surrender were a lot more colorful in the Hurts videography palette at that point too. "Lights" was a game changer and their first dance/disco/funk inspired track. In the video, Theo showcases his dancing abilities for the first time in the middle of a radiant discotheque. One of their more light-hearted videos (sans the bar fight) that isn't thematically melancholic or dark.

They've also made direct nods to their previous music on these albums. On the second verse of "Kaleidoscope", the instrumental of "Wonderful Life" can be heard interpolated. With Lana, I'd like to consider the parallels between the 'why' chants in "Art Deco" similar to the ones in the beginning of "Born to Die."

DESIRE (2017)LUST FOR LIFE (2017)
Singles: "Beautiful Ones", "Ready to Go", "Chaperone"
Themes: Love, sex, relationships
Singles: "Love", "Lust for Life", "Summer Bummer"
Themes: Growth, politics, #Change.

Parallels: I mean sis, just look at the album titles. Hurts said Desire is an "album full of passion, pain and lust." With NME, Lana responded to how happy she looked on the cover: “That was my goal, you know, to get to that place of feeling like in my daily life I had a lot of momentum. Like a moving-on-ness from wherever that other place was that ‘Honeymoon’ and ‘Ultraviolence’ came from. I loved those records, but I felt a little stuck in the same spot.”

Now let's talk about the lead singles which were both anthemic and speaking to an audience. "Beautiful Ones" is about being proud of who you are. The video, in dramatic Hurts fashion, showcases a bittersweet message of being yourself where Theo is a drag queen who gets attacked after a party, seeks revenge and ends in doom, but played in reverse. The song was used as a pride anthem for Christopher Street Day.

"Love" is about enjoying the feeling of being young and in #love, and Lana is singing to an audience of young couples.

Quite the shift since their first albums.

What's also weird to me is that since their photo together in 2013 (header), they've released albums in the same year since.

On that note, Theo had this to say about Lana: "She is someone we really admire. She is somebody we feel is at least on the same wavelength when it comes to what pop music should be."

“We have a great respect for how she conducts her artistry so it would be fantastic. She is lovely. She is really something to be treasured. She said in an interview that she wants to make something her generation can be proud of and that’s lovely in a world where things can disintegrate very quickly. We do that with people like Bowie.”

Ahh, my faves
